I’m Torgny Hylén (call me Tor).
I have 22 years design experience; 19 of those in digital. I’ve been a cook, artist, journalist, newspaper editor, graphic designer, animator, web designer, art director, creative director, and long time pen & paper role-player. These days I run my own little design corner on the web, Hylén Digital.
The big agency
I freelanced for most of my twenties until I joined Ogilvy Interactive Cape Town in 2001 as a digital designer. My first big project was Audi South Africa’s corporate website. I was Group Head in about a year and Creative Director in four. I quadrupled the size of the department, got appointed to the Ogilvy Cape Town Holding Board after six years and in early 2009, decided it was time again to do my own thing.
I have won awards for my work. In South Africa: 2 Golds, 1 Silver and 2 Bronzes at the Loeries. The Design Indaba Under Construction New Media award. 2 ROAR awards. Internationally: Cannes Lions Merit award, FWA Site of Day and a One Show Merit. Lastly, another dozen plus gif animation awards from the nineties.
Some of the bigger brands I have worked on include Audi, American Express, BP, British American Tobacco, Castle Lager, Castrol, CellC, Investec, Old Mutual, MWEB, South African Tourism, South African Breweries, Sun International, Volkswagen, Weylandts and World Wildlife Fund.

If I’m not taking my annual break to Koh Samui Thailand, I’m building mobile games with my friend Justin Schwartz in our joint venture Sprouted Interactive. Our first game is called Make Words or Die [iOS, Android], and we’re working on our next.
I enjoy playing games as much as designing them, so free time is usually spent either with a gamepad in hands, or running a variety of pen & paper roleplaying games, Netrunning, or a myriad of any new cool boardgames. I love the art of making movies, story-telling in all its forms, and the kitchen. Oh, and lest I forget, there is Felix who is my cat overlord.
Torgny’s work is always incredible. He brings lateral, inventive thinking and yet logical sound reason to ideas. We always know we’re going straight to the top shelf when we call him. The trail of awards he leaves behind him is no accident.
Tor manages people kindly but firmly, and is well liked by all he works with. He is intensely passionate about his design work, has keen insight and comes up with simple solutions to what seem like impossible problems.
To put it simply, Tor is the finest digital creative I know. We worked as a creative/technical partnership for a few years, and I thoroughly enjoyed every project we worked on. His ideas are always original, clear, relevant and exciting, and I was never short of an implementation challenge, which kept things fun. I owe a lot to my time working with him.
Torgny Hylen is a gifted strategic and creative thinker. His knowledge and insight into the digital realm, what drives behaviour, how brands can live there…was always a competitive advantage for us at Ogilvy. In pitches, in special projects and the day-to-day. He’s a team player. He’s got heart. He’s positive and great to be around. I’d want to have Tor on my side any day.
